Diabetes
is the sixth leading cause of death by disease in the USA. Between 16 and
20 million people have diabetes and half do not know it. Diabetes was
responsible for over 193,000 deaths (1996), health care costs directly
related to diabetes treatment, including lost productivity, runs over $98
billion annually. 14% of all health care costs are caused by diabetes, 27%
of Medicare's budget is spent on seniors with diabetes, 40-45% of people
over the age of 65 have diabetes or Impaired Glucose Tolerance.
Diabetes
is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in people 20-74, leading
cause of end-stage renal disease, and people with diabetes are 2-4 times
more likely to have heart disease, 2-4 times more likely to suffer a
stroke, and is responsible for over 67,000 amputations each year
(1993-1996).
