Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in people 20-74, leading cause of end-stage renal disease, and people with diabetes are 2-4 times more likely to have heart disease, 2-4 times more likely to suffer a stroke, and is responsible for over 67,000 amputations each year (1993-1996).
